OCCUPATION: Miner (Formerly), Prospector
HISTORY: While it's unclear what happened to his mother, we know Norton's father contracted black lung while working in the mines. After his death, Norton took up mining himself. Mining was a risky occupation, especially in a time when miners had to work long hours for little pay, but Norton proved to be a hard and loyal worker. Always the first one in, always the last one out. Always had a good work ethic… Which earned him plenty of mockery from his coworkers.
Life was very hard for Norton. He grew weary of barely being able to afford enough to eat while hopping from job to job, and though he looked after the homeless old miners in the local hospice from time to time he certainly didn’t want to end up like them. So he always looked to improve his work, hoping to learn some new technique and perhaps improve his situation. Not that he was having much luck through hard work alone. There had to be some opportunity…
One day, an old miner who happened to be Norton's uncle showed Norton a list of mines that might possibly have gold! Thirteen mines in total… Though the name of the last one was crossed out. Although he promised to share the possible riches, Norton left that old man behind to visit all thirteen mines himself.
After having no luck in the first twelve mines, he found something interesting in the thirteenth. The mine known as Golden Cave had been struck by a large meteorite that blocked the tunnels and made the foundation unstable. That didn’t stop Norton or the mining team he joined from going in…
It's unclear why Norton did what he did. Maybe the chunks of meteorite deep in that mine messed with him, giving him a serious case of gold fever. Maybe he was sick of taking so much torment from his jealous coworkers, or perhaps he was just desperate to secure whatever was in the mine for himself. Whatever the reason, Norton smuggled explosives into the mine and set them off.
The detonation caused the mine to collapse.
Several days later, Norton woke up in the hospital to find severe burns on his face and all the other miners dead. Others visited him while he was recovering to give him a few token words of comfort before giving him a wide berth… He was never the same after the accident. His personality changed, inching towards more polarized extremes. The only things he got from that disaster was a chunk of the meteorite, which he polished into round magnets. He hardly spoke about the accident since, and even became a prospector to avoid having to enter the mines again… And yet, he was still looking for opportunities to change his fate and improve his life in spite of everything.
When an invitation came from Oletus Manor, Norton saw the incredible amount of money offered to the winner and took the chance. How could a game be worse than what he had gone through?
